Dalkeith
Elementary School – Our History
With
a wave of English speaking families moving into the city
of Anjou in the 60’s, there was an urgent need for
an English primary school.
Accordingly, Dalkeith opened
its doors in 1961 under the direction of The Protestant
School Board of Greater Montreal.
A photograph of all students
and staff was taken in the gymnasium to commemorate the
opening. The mayor at the time was Mr. Ernest Crépeault
and the principal of Dalkeith was Mr. J.J. Sims. |
 |
‘Monsieur le Maire’ made
visits to the school every September. He would welcome back
the students and staff by handing
out freshly picked apples from overflowing boxes.

As
the city of Anjou grew, in 1965, an extension to Dalkeith
was built to accommodate the expanding English population.
The addition to Dalkeith included six new classrooms.
In
June of 1991, a school picture was taken to celebrate Dalkeith’s
30th anniversary.
This picture was taken inside the gymnasium,
just as the original one was during Dalkeith’s first
full year of welcoming students in 1962. |
In 1998, the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, also
known as the PSBGM, was merged with the Montreal Catholic School
Commission to form the English Montreal School Board.
On June 14, 2002, Dalkeith celebrated its 40th anniversary with
a soiree inviting political and contemporary educational figures,
as well as, alumni and personnel from the past and present. As
guests arrived, they were welcomed and invited to re-visit their
school. After a toast and roll call, everyone proceeded outside
for a tree planting ceremony performed by Ms. Lise Theriault
who was, and still is, the MNA of Anjou. There was a public salute
on the school grounds and then everyone was guided into the schoolyard
to enjoy a family fair opened for the children and adults.
