Emergency School Closure

Inclement weather, storm warning or other reasons such as a power failure may force the closure of the school either in the early morning or during the day.

Notice

Parents are asked to note the following information regarding the closing of schools:

School Cancellations

Notice to shut down the Board's schools or to cancel busing because of snow storms or for other reasons will be broadcast by major radio stations beginning at 6:30 in the morning.

If a shutdown announcement is not heard by 7:00 a.m., parents may assume that the school will remain open. Do not call the school office.

Early Closures

If schools are open but weather conditions, power failures, etc., force an early closing, the shutdown will be timed around the lunch hour.

Announcements will be broadcast beginning around 11:00 a.m.

Information to this effect will only be made to indicate closings. The following Emergency procedures will be put into effect.

  • Depending on the situation the children will be taken to either

    • the Montreal West Arena (220 Bedrock) or
    • to Edinburgh School (500 Hudson Street).

    A recorded message will be left at E.B. Office indicating where the children have been taken.

    Four large, fluorescent red signs will be placed around the school indicating that there has been an Emergency Closure and where the children have been taken.

    The children will remain under the supervision of their teachers for the remainder of the school day and return home at the usual time.

  • Children who normally take the bus.

    • Busing will be provided at the Arena or Edinburgh school and to take them home at the usual departure time.

If there is an early shutdown, parents/guardians/emergency contacts will be notified by telephone.

To ensure that you are notified, please fill out both copies of the Emergency Closure form in the Agenda Book.

Parents are urged to plan for emergencies by arranging for a neighbor to receive their child if they are at work. Your neighbor/relative as well as your child must understand these plans.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENT/GUARDIAN TO ENSURE THAT THE SCHOOL HAS THE CORRECT ADDRESS AND UP-TO-DATE PHONE NUMBERS (HOME, BUSINESS AND EMERGENCY) AT ALL TIMES. IF, DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, THESE DETAILS CHANGE, THE SCHOOL MUST BE INFORMED IMMEDIATELY.
