Extra-Curricular Activities

Elizabeth Ballantyne offers many extra-curricular activities to its students during class time, at lunch and after-school.

Academic Activities

Chess club meets once a week with Chess masters from Association Echecs et Math. They give a 12 week course to a beginners and an advanced group. They accompany our students to local tournaments, at which our students have enjoyed some success.

Geography Bee

Students will participate in the Canadian Geography Bee in April. The three finalists will represent the school at the Sacred Heart Competition later in the year, where we have placed second and third in successive years.

This year we have 2 robotics clubs. Our "Robotics for beginners" takes place on Monday afternoons from 3:30-4:30pm. This course provides students with an introduction to basic design and programming. The students will compete with each other in school.

Our second, more senior team, meets on Friday afternoons from 3:30-4:30pm and is a selected group of students who will be representing our school at the Junior Robotics Competition in April. Our school has won the gold medal in soccer for the past 2 years, so we are looking forward to the competition once again this year.

With both teams, we have about 50 students participating in the after-school Robotics program. This program is led by EBS Alumni, Steven and Nicholas Dahdah, as well as Luka Beaudette-Nagai.

Spelling Bee

Sadly , Canspell lost its corporate sponsors, and so is no longer in existence. We decided to continue our tradition of training great spellers by holding our own invitational Spelling Bee in April. We have challenged students from St. Monica and Merton schools.

Every year, the grade 6 students create a committee to work together with a volunteer parent and teacher in order to create a special memory book for graduation. This is a lasting keepsake for the graduating students filled with writing, drawings and photographs.

Sports and Physical Activities

All these activities are held at lun chtime and supervised by our Phys Ed teacher, M. Fortin. For each sport, there is a league with teams, a schedule and a playoff. As a reward for the winning teams, they get to compete against staff members, in front of a huge crowd in the gym.

  • Basketball
  • Floor Hockey
  • Newcomball
  • Soccer
  • Softball

Skating Activities (January & February) & Skate-A-Thon

EBS is fortunate to be able to use the Montreal West arena which is situated near the school. Every Friday for several months, teachers are invited to skate with their respective classes.  A Skate-A-Thon is held (beginning of March), to raise funds for the Montreal West Children’s Library.

Art, Music and Drama

Theatre Club

After several weeks of rehearsals, students from grades 3-6 displayed their talents in a presentation of the “Wizard of Oz”, as adapted by Ms. Garland. Students entertained parents and friends at a performance on Thursday evening, February 28th. Another performance was held for the whole school on Thursday, March 14th. Colourful costumes and simple props helped to bring the story to life. The students are already asking what we will present next time!
