In May, 2008 the EMSB Council of Commissioners established a Green Committee to develop a Green Policy and Action Plan for the school board.
In December 2002 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare the decade 2005-2014 the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). This resolution is about values, with respect at the centre; respect for others, including those of present and future generations, for differences and diversity, for the environment, for the resources of the planet we inhabit.
The principles of the ESD mirrors those embedded within the Quebec Education Programme. Considered a Broad Area of Learning, Environmental Awareness and Consumer Rights and Responsibilities aims to encourage students to develop an active relationship with their environment while maintaining a critical attitude towards exploitation of the environment, technological development and consumer goods.
The EMSB is committed to offering quality education in response to the needs of our youth and adult learners, and to imparting values to ensure all of our students become contributing and responsible adults. The EMSB Green Policy and Action Plan link to Strategic Orientations 2 and 4 within the EMSB Strategic Plan 2009-2014.
