MONTREAL, JUNE 14, 2001 The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) and the Mackay Centre School wish to express their appreciation to Q92 FM Radio and morningshow hosts Aaron Rand and Paul Zakaib (a.k.a Tasso) for the campaign they have launched to raise money to replace stolen computer equipment.

Mackay Centre, which serves students who are deaf, physically handicapped or have language and speech problems, was victimized by a robbery last weekend. Computer equipment valued at $26,454 and used by students aged four to 21 was stolen. Q92 is collecting donations from listeners and asking people to send their cheques to Q92 FM PO Box 92.5, Montreal, Quebec, H4G 3M1. Money can also be dropped off at the Mackay Centre (3500 Decarie) or the front desk of the EMSB Administration Building (6000 Fielding Avenue).

Deaf students use the computers to improve their literacy and their receptive and expressive skills of American Sign Language. Through videos made with and for the students, they learn new signs or correct their own signing. Younger children can master basic computer skills as early as four years of age, says computer teacher Jacques Monfette.

For physically handicapped students, teachers and specialists from the Mackay Center have been able to adapt access to these machines with special devices and programs purchased for the very specific needs of each child. Pupils with speech and language problems, meanwhile, take advantage of the many applications that were purchased for them. Computers are always ready to read a story or provide fun activities.

School Principal Ben Fagan says that all students have access to the infinite resources available on worldwide web and they enjoy communicating with friends from all over the world via e-mail.

"Much of the equipment stolen had been donated," said Mr. Fagan. "Therefore it is not covered by insurance. We very much appreciate Aaron, Tasso and Q92 stepping forward as such good corporate citizens."
