CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL AT PIERRE ELLIOTT TRUDEAU ELEMENTARY

MONTREAL, AUGUST 24, 2001– The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) is proud to honor the legacy of the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau. An elementary school in Rosemount previously known as Francesca Cabrini has been renamed in memory of the former Canadian prime minister and will welcome students for the first day of classes on Tuesday, August 28.

A special assembly – open to the media – will take place in the school gymnasium (6855 Cartier) at 11 a.m. At this time students will be reminded who Pierre Trudeau was. They will hear from Max Bernard, a senior partner at the law firm of Heenan Blaikie who worked alongside Trudeau for many years. "We want the children to know who Pierre Elliott Trudeau was," says Principal Walter Turchyn.

When nearby Emily Carr School merged with Francesca Cabrini a mere two weeks before the start of classes just over a year ago, the governing board agreed to look at a name change. As a result of Bill 111, which allows the provincial government to transfer properties from one school board to another, Emily Carr was handed to the Commission scolaire de Montreal (CSDM). The vast majority of Emily Carr’s 365 students joined Francesca Cabrini’s student population of some 150.

The names of Francesca Cabrini and Emily Carr will be commemorated at the school as well.

Two other Montreal area school boards have also named elementary schools after Trudeau. The Lester B. Pearson School Board will open a new primary school in Vaudreuil on September 4. It will offer immersion and bilingual instruction to more than 400 students in kindergarten through Grade 6. The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board will open a new elementary facility in Blainville in January. In the meantime, that school will operate in an annex facility adjacent to Rosemere High School.
