NESBITT IM—>PRESSES WITH LITERACY PROJECT

MONTREAL, MARCH 20, 2012 – Under the watchful eye of teachers Katherine Childs and Luisa Mercadante and the one-of-a-kind Im—>Press Project, students at Nestbitt Elementary School in Rosemount are becoming Canada’s newest authors, one page at a time.

“The Im—>Press Project is a student-centered literacy initiative that uses passion as a springboard to learning by giving students the opportunity to become authors and illustrators of their own books,” said Luisa.

Conceived in 2004 at the Cowansville Academy for Lifelong Learning, a rural alternative school and adult education centre which specialized in helping marginalized and disaffected students experience and achieve individualized academic and personal success, the project has traveled to schools in Bath, England; Stockholm, Sweden; Istanbul, Turkey and Virginia before finding its new home at Nesbitt Elementary School.

“Two children at Conwasville enjoyed reading so much as adolescents because they had had wonderful books read to them when they were children,” said Childs. “They figured that if they could write books that children would enjoy, than perhaps they could get children involved in reading and help them to love it too.”

“The project operates on the assumption of belief,” added Childs. “From this initial success, students begin to look at themselves differently. This newly-discovered belief in themselves carries over into other areas: school, family and community.”

Students give back to the community by donating their books to local CLSCs, hospitals, schools, and libraries. If profits are made, a portion go into a scholarship fund in which at least $150 is awarded annually to a student to enable him or her to continue his or her education or training.
