NESBITT SCHOOL ENGAGES STUDENTS WITH PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, MAY 22, 2012  Nesbitt  Elementary School in Rosemount’s  latest initiative to engage students is a photography project entitled  From Eye to I / À vue d’oeil. Teachers Luisa Mercadante and Katharine Childs began this project to give elementary students the opportunity to learn about photography and to become aware of their own unique talents and personal vision of the world – while at the same time sharing this new perspective and way of looking at things with others.

Students receive a certain amount of coaching from a professional photographer (Monique Dykstra of Studio Iris) so that they become familiar with the use of digital cameras, composition, and lighting. They then learn how to make decisions regarding selecting, matting and framing the resulting photographs. Shooting photos begins in the surrounding school environment and expands to include not only the students’ own neighbourhoods, but other places of interest in the Greater Montreal area. Field trips (“shooting expeditions”) to places like Chinatown are often arranged to accommodate student interests.

Through the use of (digital) photography, students develop new perspectives – other ways of seeing and looking at the world that surrounds them. Students begin to develop an “eye” and a personalized artistic philosophy regarding photography in general. The resulting photographs help students develop pride in themselves and in their own work.

Students are encouraged to articulate their thoughts and insights through an artist’s statement or a brochure that describes and depicts their work. They are also invited to produce a small body of work for exhibition and to donate framed pieces to community venues and groups. This year, these photographers will be publicly exhibiting their work  on Wednesday, June 13 ( 4:30 p.m. to  7:30 p.m.) at the Trinity United Church (3050 Rosemont Avenue)  just across from Nesbitt. The public is invited to attend and light refreshments will be served.
