MONTREAL, MAY 28, 2012 Students from across the English Montreal School Board recently attended the 14th annual Student Leadership Camp, which took place  at Val-Estrie in Waterville, Quebec. The camp was organized and run by approximately 30 high school students. This annual retreat provides an opportunity to nurture a spirit of sharing and community amongst   students as they hone their leadership skills.

The mission of the camp was to foster the development of student leadership through icebreakers, experiential learning, guided discussions, team building activities and personal reflections, as well as imparting leadership experiences between the campers. These undertakings are accomplished in a safe and friendly environment where students are encouraged to challenge their comfort levels and grow as leaders. The keynote address by Chris Cummins stressed the importance of goals, accomplishing your dreams and making a difference one small step at a time.
In many schools, the students involved in leadership are actively involved in the life-blood of their schools: planning and organizing school activities, serving as ambassadors to their community and as social activists. As representatives of the student body, they sit on committees such as Governing Board, English Montreal School Advisory Committee, marketing committees and informally at times when there is a wish to evaluate the feelings of the student body.

Approximately 230 students from James Lyng, John Paul I, Laurenhill Acadamy, Laurier Macdonald, Lester B. Pearson, Marymount Academy, Royal Vale, Rosemount, Royal West Academy, Vincent Massey Collegiate and Westmount participated. Most students arrived at camp strangers but left having formed bonds of friendship across our network of schools and life-long memories. They may have returned home physically tired after but they were emotionally energized and ready to take on the mantle of leadership at their schools.
