MONTREAL, AUGUST 24, 2012
– In advance of the upcoming provincial election, representatives from the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) are meeting with candidates from the main political parties in order to ensure that the concerns of the public school system are addressed.

The second in a series of meetings took place on August 24 when EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini, Vice--Chairman Sylvia Lo Bianco and Commissioner Frank Verrillo (also vice-president of the Quebec English School Boards Association) met with Chantal Longpré, the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) candidate in Repentigny.  The immediate past president of the  Fédération québécoise des directions d'établissement d'enseignement (FQDE), the organization which represents in-school administrators in the French public school system, Ms. Longpré is also a former school principal.

There was a lot of discussion related to the CAQ’s position of abolishing school boards.    Ms. Longpré explained that a CAQ government would replace the English boards with regional service centres and give more authority to governing boards.  Ms. Mancini made the point that taxpayers who do not have students in the public system anymore need to have political representation. “If you are elected,” Ms. Lo Bianco stressed, “then I hope a full consultation will take place before any decisions are made.”

Ms. Longpré made it clear that a CAQ government would not restrict access to anyone for English CEGEPS or adult education and vocational services. She also spoke about the need to provide school principals with more support.
