LAURIER MACDONALD HIGH SCHOOL TO CELEBRATE PEACE DAY

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 Students and staff at Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard will celebrate Peace Day  on  Friday, September 21 with a variety of exciting all-day events.  The theme of this year’s Peace Day celebration is “PLAY.”

To show support for the Global Truce 2012 campaign, Laurier Macdonald has organized a marathon eight-hour soccer tournament called the “Forever Game.  Teams will play continuously from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. to symbolize what children in conflict areas around the world would do if they could enjoy just one full day of peace: they would just keep playing.

In addition to this special soccer event, students will also have the opportunity to celebrate Peace Day by watching live bands, participating in an all-day “Peace Dance,” engaging in creative peace-related activities, and learning about the value of peace during their daily classes.

Peace Day is an annual event unanimously recognized by United Nations member states as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence.  Every year, on Sept. 21, aid workers can safely deliver essential food and medical supplies to innocent people living in conflict areas.  For combatants, it is a day of reflection.  For those living in conflict areas, it is a brief window of freedom and celebration.

Since 2007, 4.5 million children have benefitted from polio vaccinations as a result of Peace Day agreements in Afghanistan.  This is just one example of what can be accomplished when a ceasefire is observed for just a single day. Millions of people around the world already celebrate Peace Day and there are currently over 11,500 educators in 175 countries who are organizing school-based activities to mark this occasion.  Laurier Macdonald is proud to join this growing list and invite you to come and share our celebration on Sept. 21.
