EMSB STUDENTS TAKE PART IN WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, OCTOBER 22, 2012 – Schools around the English Montreal School Board participated in International Walk To School Day, an annual event that invites children, parents and teachers to walk together to school and bring attention to the myriad of benefits that result of walking.

Royal Vale in N.D.G., General Vanier School in St. Leonard, LaurenHill Academy’s Junior Campus in St. Laurent and Our Lady of Pompei School in Ahuntsic took part in walks featuring the entire school and staff. Walking to school highlights the health benefits of being active as well as fosters a sense of community and safety, hopefully encouraging students to continue walking to school in the future.

At Royal Vale, students were joined by their parents and teachers at N.D.G. Park at 7:15 a.m. to walk to school, while at General Vanier, students arrived at school and walked around the block, two kilometers in all, with their classmates, teachers and parents who were able to participate.

Our Lady of Pompei students enjoyed a great start to their day with a walk through Parc des Hirondelles. Furthermore, younger students were partnered up with their older peers to promote leadership and school unity. The walk served an added purpose for students as it was dedicated to honor one of Canada’s great heroes, Terry Fox.

Around the world, October is International Walk to School month. Canada’s first ever Walk to School Day took place on October 4, 2000. Last year, 42 countries and millions of individuals participated in the event.

If just nine families walked to school regularly over taking the school bus, they can collectively prevent almost 1,000 kg of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.
