MONTREAL, OCTOBER 15, 2012 – Work to remove asbestos from the  John F. Kennedy High School  and Business Centre facility in St. Michel is proceeding as scheduled, with students and staff set to return there on January 7, 2013.

“The whole J.F.K. community would like to return to our facilities; however, our priority right now remains the education of your children and the cleaning of our facility,”  Principal Joseph Marra said in a message to parents. “The work is presently on schedule and our return date remains January 7, 2013. Thank you ever so much for your continued support.”

The building has been closed since May 14, 2012 after the discovery of traces of asbestos. “The pictures on our school website show the progress being made of the cleaning of our school,” said Mr. Marra.  “The complete project at our JFK building is overseen by an environmental consultant who visits the site on a regular basis. Air testing is also carried on by an independent firm, which further assures that the building will be a very clean and a safe learning environment for all.”

JFK High School has been temporarily housed at Rosemount High School while JFKBC operations are presently based out of the Rosemount Technology Centre Curtis George  Campus in Montreal North and the Shadd Business Centre in N.D.G.

“The Administration of JFKBC  has extended its thanks to the Shadd Business Centre and the Rosemount Technology Centre for all of their help and gracious accommodations, the AEVS department for its support, and all of the JFKBC staff and students for their understanding and patience throughout this experience,” says JFKBC Acting Principal Lino Buttino. “All of the JFKBC community is gladly awaiting our return to the Centre. We are confident that our school board is doing its best to ensure we return to a safe and secure building.”
