MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 29, 2012-The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) has confirmed plans to open a new high school in the former Wagar High School facility in Cote Saint-Luc for the 2014-2015 academic year, provided the necessary registration numbers are attained.

EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini announced that unlike previous attempts to bring a new mainstream high school to what is now called the Giovanni Palatucci  Facility, plans  call for an appropriate window to be given to  introduce an enriched curriculum and an open house  in early fall 2013. Plans call for the proposed new school to cohabitate with John Grant High School, Marymount Adult Education Centre and the EMSB Book Processing Centre, which are  presently in the building.

Another plus in this new process, emphasizes Cote Saint-Luc Commissioner Syd Wise, is the appointment of Steven Erdelyi as a resource for the new CSL high school. He is presently the principal of Hampstead Elementary School.  For the previous four years he served as vice-principal at Westmount High School. He is also a city councillor in Cote Saint-Luc and knows the community extremely well.
Commissioner Wise said that the first order of business will be to find a name for the new school.

A contest is now being launched at  Choices include Cote Saint-Luc, Parkhaven, Wallenberg or Wagar High School or Academy. There is also space to suggest a different name and email this to  The contest will conclude on November 30.

It is the intent of the EMSB to start the school with Secondary I students. The school concept has the full cooperation of the City of Cote Saint-Luc and Mayor Anthony Housefather, who sits on the task force studying the option. “We want to propose a Sports Concentration option and use the facilities of the city’s new Aquatic and Community Centre across the street from the school,” said Commissioner Wise. “We also hope to offer a Heritage Languages and Enriched Sciences option.”

A public information meeting will be held next spring for parents. Provided the school reaches a critical mass of students following a fall registration period, it would open for the 2014-2015 academic year.
