EMSB STUDENTS ENJOY MCGILL HOCKEY GAME AS PART OF SCORE WITH SCHOOL PROGRAM

MONTREAL,  NOVEMBER 2,  2012 – More than 700 students from the English Montreal School Board were in attendance on November 2 at McGill University’s McConnell Winter Stadium for an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) regular season game between the defending national champion Redmen and York University.

This special daytime game was part of the Score with School Program, coordinated by Rooths Sports and Martin Routhier. He is a former McGill team captain. Over the course of the season McGill players will be visiting EMSB schools, emphasizing the importance of staying in school and getting a university education. At the game itself there were motivational speeches, with a reminder that someone can be an elite athlete and maintain good grades at the same time. St. Laurent school commissioner Bernard Praw represented EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini for the opening faceoff.

Former Montreal Canadiens forward Mathieu Darche, a one-time star player for the Redmen, is  an ambassador for the Score with School Program. He was in attendance at the game and spoke to students during the first intermission. Darche graduated with a degree in Commerce and Marketing and then went on to play in the NHL.  Members of the McGill Lady Martlets hockey team alsocame to centre ice and emphasized the importance of staying in school. The McGill cheerleaders assisted in physical fitness activities between whistles. McGill won the game 2-0.

The November 2 game was treated as a pedagogical field trip. The EMSB has participated in such programs over the past several years with Rooths Sports, McGill and the former Montreal Juniors. Students from LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent, Perspectives I and II and John F. Kennedy High Schools  in St. Michel, Elizabeth Ballantyne Elementary School in Montreal West and John Caboto Academy in Ahuntsic.  Grade 10 LaurenHill Academy student Adam Farahat  sang O Canada.  He is part of the school’s upcoming production of  South Pacific, December  and 15. 

Five EMSB students were awarded ING Direct cash scholarships of $300 each:  Bianca Bernabei, John Caboto;  Jarik Pillai,  Elizabeth Ballantyne: Katerina (Ionna) Lazaris, LaurenHill; Denise Moshonas, John F. Kennedy; and Mirkan Cevirme, Perspectives. ING Direct’s Marianne Tadros and Darche made the official presentations.
