MONTREAL, APRIL 23, 2013- An information meeting will be held on Thursday, April 25 (7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.) at Vincent Massey Collegiate (5925 27th Avenue) in the Rosemount-La Petite-Patrie borough to answer any questions related to testing conducted on the grounds where a new double gymnasium and four additional classrooms will be built.

Last year the English Montreal School Board received formal confirmation from the Quebec Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sports (MELS) that funding in the amount of $4.3 million had been granted for this project. Vincent Massey is an Article 240 special status school, with an enriched and structured CEGEP preparatory program. It has a student population of 752 in a building which was designed to accommodate 725 when it was constructed in 1959.

Because the extension of the building is being done on land where a quarry once stood, approval must be given by the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Wildlife and Parks for construction to commence. Since this Ministry requires that soil testing results be conducted and are acceptable, the EMSB Council of Commissioners approved that the results of tests done by Groupe ABS be sent directly to the Ministry. Groupe ABS has undertaken a battery of tests, looking for any traces of various elements. The results of the tests showed acceptable levels for all elements. Before the report is analyzed by the Ministry, a public information meeting is required.

“We are pleased to see that the results from this study show that there is no danger to the health of any present or future occupants of either the existing building nor the new construction,” said EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini. “Nonetheless, our experts will be available on April 25 should anyone have questions.”

The EMSB hopes to complete the extension of the building in time for the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.
