EMSB TO MARK MENTAL HEALTH WEEK MAY 6 to 10

MONTREAL, APRIL 24, 2013 –  The Mental Health Resource Centre (MHRC) of the English Montreal School Board  Student Services Department will kick off Mental Health Week on Monday, May 6 (8:45 a.m.) with a workshop by  Dr. Regalena Melrose,  a California based clinical and school psychologist and international speaker.
Dr. Melrose’s basic message is that we must take the time and recognize the physiological responses our bodies emit to stressful situations. She will share this with  staff from Leonardo Da Vinci Academy in RDP and Parkdale Elementary School in St. Laurent at the  Costa del Mare Reception Hall (5605 Amos Street) in Montreal North. This is part of an ongoing series of presentations.
“The strategy Dr. Melrose presents helps in the prevention of developing serious problems and can help with those who exhibit the most challenging of behaviours,” said Despina Vassiliou, a psychologist and the coordinator of the MHRC.

Between May 6 and  10, awareness of mental health promotion and illness will also be highlighted via daily messages on the EMSB website and with the official launch of the new  MHRC website.  On May 8,  the  atrium  at the  EMSB Administration Building  in NDG will  feature information  booths on mental health and illness from the MHRC, EMSB,  and outside community resources. There will also be a representative from the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to highlight to staff the mental health services available to them.  A presentation from   EMSB nutritionists will highlight foods that help combat stress. Quizzes, raffles for prizes, and mini anti-stress kits will be available at the MHRC kiosques, as well as other surprises.

The mission of the MHRC is to promote mental health literacy via the dissemination of information regarding topics of interest and concern. We also offer support to schools on a needs basis via different modalities such as workshops (for staff or parents), program recommendations, school-based meetings and consultations. For the 2012-2013 academic year the goal of the MHRC has been to provide information and skill enhancement via professional development sessions at the school level  for the following areas of concern: building resilience; an anti-bullying information session for parents; and anxiety and stress.
