EMSB SCHOOLS CAPTURE MEDALS AT JUNIOR ROBOTICS COMPETITION

MONTREAL, MAY 23,  2013 -  A record number of students attended and competed in the 11th edition of RoboJunior Junior Robotics Competition, organized by the Educational Alliance for Science & Technology (EAST),  at  Royal West Academy in Montreal West on April 26  and 27.

A total of 350 students (Grade 3 to Secondary V) from 18 schools made up a total of 67 teams and competed for gold, silver and bronze medals

Prizes were Lego NXT kits, NXT intelligent Bricks and NXT expansion kits. The overall winning school was awarded the Quebec Junior Robotics Competition Cup. It was a sea of colorful t-shirts as students showed and shared their knowledge of science and technology with dance, search and rescue, soccer and Beatles challenge events.

There were 12 EMSB elementary schools (Bancroft in the Plateau, Cedarcrest and Gardenview in St. Laurent, Hampstead, Edinburgh and Elizabeth Ballantyne in Montreal West,  St. Monica and Royal Vale in NDG, St. Dorothy in St. Michel,  General Vanier in St. Léonard, Gerald McShane in Montreal North and Merton in Côte Saint-Luc) participating and three  high schools (Royal West in Montreal West, Vincent Massey in Rosemount and  Marymount Academy in NDG).

In the dance category, the following EMSB elementary schools competed and won: Merton’s “Santa’s Workshop” and “OZ-some” took home first and second prize while General Vanier’s “Team Elephant”  finished third. In addition, Vincent Massey’s team “Lamaj” took home third place prize for the High School category.

In the search and rescue category, Merton’s team “Merton Madness” was first while Royal Vale’s team “Searching Jellos” and “Lego Experts” took home second and third place. The EMSB high schools that won medals in this category were  Vincent Massey, coming in both first and third place, as well as  Royal West’s team “Life Savers” coming in second.

In the two-on-two soccer category, Elizabeth Ballantyne’s team “Bring it” and “The Bosses” took home first and third place and Merton’s team “Avalanche” grabbed the  second place spot. In the High School division, Royal West’s team “Flaming Pandas” and Vincent Massey’s “Robobros” swept away second and third place.

In the Beatles challenge category, Gerald McShane’s team “McShane” swept away the competition coming in first place closely followed by Merton’s team “Techno Greeks” in second and Royal Vale’s team “Electrical Conductors” in third. The High School division included Royal West’s teams “Flying Penguins” and “Apocalyptic Leprechauns” coming in at a strong second and third place.

The EMSB would like to congratulate all the participants of the competition for showcasing their innovative and creative abilities. A special mention goes out to Bancroft Elementary School for winning the Sportsmanship award and Vincent Massey Collegiate for capturing the Most Improved award at this year’s competition.
