DANTE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TAKES HOME DOUBLE GOLD IN JUNIOR TECH CHALLENGE

MONTREAL, JUNE 5, 2013 – It was a teacher’s worst nightmare at Dante Elementary School in St. Leonard recently as paper airplanes crisscrossed the gym when the school played host to the Junior Tech Challenge.

When all the planes finally came in for a landing and the numbers were tallied, Dante  captured Gold in the Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 categories.

Although paper airplanes are usually the nemesis of teachers, in this case, they served as a vital teaching tool as preparation for the event allowed for a module which taught students about the properties of flight through testing various models of paper airplanes.

There were three challenges at the event:  Accuracy and attempting to fly the plane into a box; Distance,  attempting to fly the plane as far as possible and Lift, attempting to keep the plane in the air as long as possible.

The event  featured over 120 children from schools across the country, including host Dante,  and Royal Vale in N.D.G., was organized by the CDLS-CLS Network. This comprises the Conseil de développement du loisir scientifique (CDLS) and the nine regional Conseils du loisir scientifique (CLS), as well as the Educational Alliance for Science & Technology (EAST).
