Press Releases

MONTREAL, AUGUST, 26, 2013-    On July 6, 2013 tragedy struck the small town of Lac-Mégantic in Quebec  when a freight train carrying crude oil derailed,  resulting in the fire and explosion of multiple tank cars. This deadly explosion took the lives of  47 people and demolished more than 30 buildings in the town's centre, which made up roughly half of the downtown area.

As the town commences their rebuilding process, English Montreal School Board staff members have been hard at work coming up with ideas to contribute. Spiritual Guidance & Community Involvement Animator Linda Luca, has been actively involved in this brainstorming process and came up with the “Adopt a Teddy Bear” Campaign.

During the first two weeks of October, students at Marymount Academy in N.D.G. will be given the opportunity to purchase teddy bears at the cost of $3. The bears will be sent to students of the local Lac-Mégantic elementary school, accompanied by a “birth certificate” and heart filled, hand written letter by the student it was purchased by. In addition the money raised from the sales of the bear’s will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.
