SHADD HEALTH AND BUSINESS CENTRE GRADUATES FIRST FROM ASSISTANCE IN HEALTH CARE FACILITIES PROGRAM

MONTREAL, October 4, 2013 – A ceremony took place on October 1 at the Shadd Health and Business Centre in N.D.G., in which the first class of students who took the new Assistance in Health Care Facilities Program officially graduated after successfully completing the 750-hour program.

“You have persevered and have succeeded,” said Shadd Principal Silvana Crigna. “You did something that you were passionate about, and at the same time, have raised the bar,”

Ms. Crigna also congratulated the first graduating class for their hard work, commitment and achievement, especially when they had to juggle school, work and family life.

The 17 students from the first class, of which 12 were present at the ceremony, received their certificates from EMSB Adult Education and Vocational Services (AEVS) Director Cosmo Della Rocca, AEVS Educational Consultant Harriet Cohen, EMSB Commissioner Anne Williams, and the program’s teachers. Most of the graduating students were dressed in their health care facilities uniforms for the ceremony.

Introduced last year, the Assistance in Health Care Facilities Program trains students to provide health care, assistance and services related to the needs of a patient of any age. The students also learn to welcome and integrate persons in the care unit, provide care and comfort specific to the context of the unit, which means that they adapt the basic care and services to the client’s condition, as well as to the apparatus required. Shadd has even setup a model pharmacy. The next session will commence on February 10, 2014. Registration is now underway.

“The demand for caregivers in health settings is tremendous and our graduates will proudly fulfill many needs of the health institutions in and around the Island of Montreal,” noted Ms. Crigna. “We presently have another 40 students enrolled and we wish our graduates the best in their future endeavours.”
