Library memberships offered automatically to students of the EMSB schools on the territory

Saint-Laurent, October 25, 2013 – The borough of Saint-Laurent is the midst of concluding a partnership with the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) to offer memberships to the borough’s libraries to students attending four local EMSB schools. Under the partnership, which will soon be finalised, students enrolled in these four schools will automatically receive a library card.

Students at the Saint-Laurent EMSB schools—Cedarcrest, Gardenview, Parkdale Schools and LaurenHill Academy—will thus shortly receive library cards for the Bibliothèque du Boisé and the Bibliothèque du Vieux-Saint-Laurent. Their membership will give them access to the two libraries’ vast collections of printed and digital documents and other items. The agreement between
Saint-Laurent and the EMSB, to be finalized over the next few weeks, follows up on a Montréal City Council resolution, adopted in December 2012, whereby Council gave the library network in the 19 boroughs a mandate to enter into agreements aimed at attracting new library users, forge new partnerships and negotiate agreements with private, public and parapublic organizations.

“Providing students attending EMSB schools in the borough with a membership to our libraries will help to increase the number of people using these two facilities,” said a delighted Alan DeSousa, mayor of Saint-Laurent. “The two libraries are a limitless source of information and entertainment for an entire generation of young people. By encouraging young people to use libraries, we help them to broaden their horizons.”

EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini said this is another positive example of how partnerships can be established with municipalities and boroughs. “We truly appreciate the efforts Mayor DeSousa and his administration have made in this regard,” she said. “On the occasion of National School Library Day our students could not be luckier than having access to such fine facilities. I do hope that what has occurred in Saint-Laurent can be emulated elsewhere.”
