WALLENBERG ACADEMY INFORMATION MEETING TO FOCUS ON VARIETY OF SPORTS CONCENTRATION PROGRAMS

MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 12, 2013-  The English Montreal School Board has announced that it will hold a special “sports concentration”  information meeting on Thursday, November 21  (7 p.m.)  at the former Wagar High School (5785 Parkhaven) in Côte Saint-Luc for the proposed Wallenberg Academy.

Plans call for Wallenberg Academy to open next August for students entering Grade 7 and possibly Grade 8 as well. In recent weeks there has been a surge of interest in the different sports concentration programs. “If you have a child who is interested in sports and would like to have this incorporated into their regular school day, then please attend this meeting,” states EMSB Commissioner  Dr. Syd Wise.

The school will offer all standard courses between 8:15 a.m. to 1 pm.  As such, students will be free to start their sports training at any time after 1 p.m. as opposed to waiting until after 3pm as is the case in most schools.

Thus far  the NDG Soccer Association is working with the school while a plethora of City of Côte Saint-Luc programs will include  soccer, aquatics (swimming, waterpolo and synchro), basketball, baseball, figure skating, tennis and hockey.  Children who are training in other environments will be encouraged to do so. All sporting arrangements will be made with the actual organizations and coaches where the students will train and not through the school.

“A motivated student is a successful student,” commented Dr. Wise. “Place a student in an environment in which he or she is partaking in an activity for which he or she has a passion and that student  will excel. Having the student's  tennis or swimming coach work
collaboratively with their subject teachers  to challenge that student to achieve his or her best is what the philosophy of Wallenberg is all about. The concept , mission and format of Wallenberg Academy are unique, with a student able to combine a personal passion and a quality education during the same school day. If this is what you want for your child join us non November 21. We think you'll be impressed.”

In addition to offering high quality academics, the new Wallenberg Academy will have  heritage language programs (Hebrew, Italian, Manadarin or Spanish)  and a specialty course (drama, music, robotics or similar options) in addition to the standard curriculum. Children in the sports concentration program may choose to also participate in the heritage program if their schedule permits.

The presentation on the evening of November 21 will start with a general overview of the school and its academic program and then will break out into different groups by individual sport. In those  breakout sessions,  the City of Côte Saint-Luc and any other associations offering programs will set out what sporting programs they can offer students of the school.
