EMSB’S ROYAL VALE AND LAURENHILL SHINE AT G!EE HIGH SCHOOL SHOWDOWN

MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 14, 2013The English Montreal School Board’s  Royal Vale High School in NDG won its second successive G!ee High School Showdown on  November 10, with LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent  coming in second place.

Presented as a fundraiser for   Just for Kids (JFK) Foundation, which helps provide the Montreal Children's Hospital (MCH) with the best technology and quality equipment possible, this event in particular is specifically designed to encourage Montreal high school students to use their creative talents to give back to the community. Originally, this program featured many private schools. In addition to Royal Vale and LaurenHill, the EMSB’s Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard and Royal West Academy in Montreal West were represented.

More than 750 people were in attendance at the event, held at Loyola High School. The dancing and singing competition featured original routines created by each participating team  To compete in the G!EE High School Showdown, each team was responsible to raise a minimum donation/registration fee of $1,500.  A total of $127,000 was raised on the day.

The Just For Kids Foundation G!EE High School Showdown is a hugely popular and exciting fundraising event, specifically designed to encourage Montreal high school students to use their creative talents to give back to the community. Schools create a Glee club of their very own in which they perform using a collaboration of music and dance. 

For Royal Vale, this marked the  fourth year in a row they participad.  “As the defending champions, we were focused on our fundraising goal and having fun with our passion for singing and performing,” said teacher Linda Vuong.  “We hope that the audience enjoyed watching our glam performance as much as we enjoyed performing it!  We are so proud to have come in first place a second year in a row amidst such great performances. We were thrilled that at the same time as doing something we love, we got to help a great cause.”   

This year’s event featured 10  schools, performing in front of close to 1,000 cheering parents, friends and dance enthusiasts The LaurenHill Academy team was coached by   teacher Brownwen Lloyd-Hughes. This was  the youngest team at the showdown

To compete in the G!EE High School Showdown, each team was responsible to raise a minimum donation/registration fee. This year, LaurenHill Academy raised over  $3,000,  which was in the top three school fundraisers!
