MONTREAL, JANUARY  24, 2014 –  In Melissa-Ann Ledo, the English Montreal School Board has become the only Anglophone school board in Quebec to have a full-time pedagogical consultant dedicated exclusively to the four arts.

Ms. Ledo`s dossier   involves her supporting  dance, drama, music and visual arts elementary and high school teachers.  The professional activities of this pedagogical consultant include being responsible for: school, teacher and student support, resources and professional development (providing workshops on a regular basis to arts specialists and generalists).  This position has Ms. Ledo as the liaison between the Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sports (MELS) and the schools, an advisor in the professional development and training of arts teachers and an aide in the implementation of arts programs.

Given that Secondary IV arts credits are now necessary for graduation, the EMSB has decided to have a full time dedicated pedagogical position to the arts.   “As a 21st century school board we have embraced the idea that the arts can offer an enriched education to our students of all levels,” said EMSB Pedagogical Services Director Alessandra Furfaro.  “Melissa-Ann strives for authentic art education to lead our students to higher achievement, engagement, creativity and self-confidence.  Melissa believes full heartedly in the goals set out by Quebec for Arts Education. She believes that authentic arts education leads students to be creative, self confident and develops their critical thinking and communications skills.”

Ms. Ledo  has dedicated much of her time to creating a community for her teachers, so that they can network, gain access to resources, workshops, conferences, and links and connect to the artist community.  She does so by keeping her links to the arts education world. She coordinates and  presents at the Spotlight on the Arts Conferenceat the annual Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers  convention  (the only conference that serves the Anglophone Arts Education community), sits as the chair of MAD2, the Music, Art, Dance and Drama subcommittee for the directors of the English Education Network,  is the vice-president of the Canadian Society of Education through the Arts and was an organizer  for the 2012 CSEA/CAGE conference. She sits as a member of TRAIM: Regional School Board table for the Arts, is a member of the EMSB Culture in the Schools Committee and ELAN (English-Language Arts Network). She is also coordinator for all the annual EMSB Music and Performing Arts Festivals,  often guest lectures at McGill and Concordia and recently  completed being a invited instructor for ARTE 420 at Concordia University, where she is currently also completing her graduate degree.
