PROMOTING WELLNESS AND PREVENTION AT THE EMSB

MONTREAL, APRIL 23, 2014 The Mental Health Resource Centre (MHRC) of the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) Student Services Department is offering several activities to promote Mental Health Awareness Week May 5-9, 2014. These will be held at the EMSB Administration Building in NDG (6000 avenue Fielding), with the target audience including in-school administrators, administrative building staff, guidance counselors and spiritual community animators.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) introduced Mental Health Week (MHW) in 1951 to raise awareness of mental illness in Canada. MHW today gives patients and their families’ practical ways to maintain and improve their mental health and support their recovery from mental illness. It also provides an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on our attitudes and behaviors toward people living with mental health issues. Reducing the discrimination and stigma associated with mental health problems is part of their mandate.

The MHRC has organized several diverse activities that include the following: elementary level art display by B.A.S.E. daycare, secondary level suicide prevention contest and Atrium Day, which will take place on Thursday, May 8in the Atrium of the EMSB. During this activity there will be booths that will feature physiotherapists, nutritionists, Employee Assistant Program representatives, naturopaths, community officers, and the EMSB’s MHRC professionals who will provide supportive advice to any interested participants. There will also be an art display from B.A.S.E. daycare in the Atrium, in the cafeteria via video, and in the display case outside the regional offices. Finally there will be a raffle with excellent prizes. Proceeds will be donated to the Herzl Clinic of the Jewish General Hospital, which has been providing services to EMSB students for almost 30 years.

Outstanding professionals such as Dr. Joe Flanders, a clinic psychology of McGill University; Dr. Laurie Betito, a clinic psychologist specializing in sex therapy and Dr. Sydney Miller, a clinical psychologist will give special presentations to head office staff on May 7, 8 and 9.
