EMSB TO LAUNCH FREE COMIC DAY AS A PEDAGOGICAL EXPERIENCE AT FIRST OF THREE SCHOOLS

MONTREAL, APRIL 30, 2014- Between April 28  to May 12, consultants and librarians from the English Montreal School Board’s Pedagogical Services Department will be promoting Free Comic Book Day.

Activity will take place at three schools:  Wednesday, April 30 from  (10:50 a.m. to  11:50a.m.) at LaurenHill Academy Junior Campus (2355 Decelles) in St. Laurent;  Friday, May 9 from (9 a.m. to 10 a.m.)  at Sinclair Laird Elementary School (8380 Wiseman) in Park Extension; and Monday, May 12 (tentatively 1 p.m.)  at Coronation Elementary School (4810 Van Horne) in Côte-des-Neiges.

The EMSB pedagogical consultants will present lively talks on the history and importance of comics and how to effectively read graphic texts.   There will also be trivia, prizes, and information about where to get free comics in the city on the following Saturday.

“Why Comics?” asks EMSB  English Language Arts Consultant Anne Beamish. “ Comics motivate children to read. It is well-known that children are more likely to read something that they enjoy, and are more likely to continue reading when they associate reading with pleasure.”

Notes Library Facilitator  Julia Wagner: “For a struggling reader, images can hold a child's attention longer than text. Because comic stories are told graphically, the images help students to read and understand difficult concepts or challenging stories.”

Annette MacIntyre,  another Library Facilitator, emphasizes how  comics can also help to expand a child's vocabulary, introduce narrative structure and character development, and can acquaint readers with new cultural and personal issues.

The EMSB would like to express its appreciation to the following stores for supporting these school events with the donations of comics and posters: Cosmix (931 Boul. Décarie, Saint-Laurent), Drawn and Quarterly (211 Rue Bernard Ouest),  and Komico (5311 Queen Mary).
