GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW CLASSROOMS SET FOR THURS. MAY 22 AT JOHN PAUL I HS IN ST. LEONARD

MONTREAL, MAY 21, 2003- The English Montreal School Board is pleased to announce that groundbreaking ceremonies for the construction of four new locals (two classrooms and two labs) at John Paul I Junior High School in St. Leonard (8455 Pre-Laurin) will take place at 9 a.m. on Thurs. May 22, 2003.

St. Leonard's English population has shown unprecedented growth in recent years. Overcrowding at the elementary level resulted in a new school, General Vanier, being introduced in 2000-2001. In response to increasing student enrollment, it became necessary to turn attention to the secondary schools in the St. Leonard area. Following a major consultation process throughout October and November, and in response to community wishes for a continuation of the junior high school model in the area, the Council of Commissioners voted in favor of construction of four classrooms at the John Paul 1 High School facility. This will allow the junior high school to continue to offer its wide-range of academic programs to its full community.

The current structure on Pré-Laurin Street has a capacity for 525 student places. Over the last five years its enrolment has increased from 497 to 620 students. In the 2002-2003 school year, 96 John Paul 1 students were housed in its sister senior high school, Laurier Macdonald, in order to alleviate the overcrowding at John Paul I.
