MONTREAL, APRIL 8, 2004- Stéphanie Béland, a student in the Automobile Mechanics program at Laurier Macdonald Vocational Centre and Mary Ann Veluz, who takes Printing at Rosemount Technology Centre, were winners at the Chapeau, les filles! Awards ceremony which took place at CIMME (Centre intégré de mécanique, de métallurgie et d'électricité) in LaSalle on April 7.

Chapeau, les Filles? (Hats Off) rewards women who excel in their studies in non-traditional roles. Ms. Beland was presented with a $750 prize by André Dumont, president of the Table de concertation des directeurs généraux des commissions scolaires de l’île de Montréal. Ms. Veluz received a $500 cheque from Véronique De Sève, representing the Conféderation des syndicates nationaux.

Fueled by her need to learn more about automobiles, Ms. Beland ventured into what she considers to be the thrill of operating equipment, and solving complex problems. This is also a person who considers her sense of humour as one of her most important tools in practicing her non-traditional career.

Ms. Veluz is a 4'11" dynamo who excels at any challenge she takes on. While studying Digital Layout and Printing, she was a class representative, the department representative, a member of the governing board, as well as a finalist in the Board of Trade competition. She has worked as a volunteer in hospitals and while in high school, organized a successful project to help keep kids out of trouble. Her goal is to establish her own international publishing company.
