EMSB DELEGATION VISITS UTT ST. LAURENT WITH PRESENTATION OF BOOKS AND OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE

MONTREAL, APRIL 14, 2004— In the wake of the recent act of arson and anti-Semitic vandalism at the St. Laurent campus of the United Talmud Torahs (UTT), a delegation from the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) visited the location on April 15.

Chairman Dominic Spiridigliozzi was accompanied by representatives from the EMSB’s five St. Laurent schools - Gardenview, Parkdale, Cedarcrest, Holy Cross and LaurenHill. Students from Gardenview presented library books they collected on their own to their UTT counterparts. Mr, Spiridigliozzi brought two boxes of books from the EMSB Book and Media Processing Centre, promising that there would be more such donations to come from different schools.

The EMSB schools all offered UTT use of their libraries and presented cards made by students. Gardenview announced that it will hold a special dress down day on Mon. April 26 to raise money for the reconstruction of the UTT library. Cedarcrest Governing Board Chairperson, Rocco Fazzolari and teacher Bram Caron said that their classes will be donating book bonuses from their Scholastic book sales to UTT. In a show of solidarity for school libraries and their importance in children's lives, EMSB librarians will be donating a new copy of students' favorite book per school library to share with the children who have lost some of their favorite stories. The EMSB delegation was warmly received by UTT Director General Sidney Benudiz, campus Principal Soly Benamron and other staff, students and parents.

The EMSB has condemned the act of arson and anti-Semitic vandalism which occurred at UTT last week. Mr. Spiridigliozzi is in fact calling upon all public boards to follow the example of the EMSB and initiate projects which promote racial tolerance. This year, for instance, EMSB students have taken part in a special Holocaust awareness program, including meetings with survivors and guided visits to the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. The next such visit will be on Tues. April 27 (1 p.m.) by Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard.
