FIRST EMSB SCHOLARSHIP FUND GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES MORE THAN $20,000

MONTREAL, JULY 1, 2004— The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) held its first annual Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament on Wednesday, June 30 at the Lachute Golf Club (355 Bethany Road) in Lachute. More than $20,000 was raised. The Norshield Development Foundation served as a major sponsor. Paul Kefalas, the president and CEO of ABB, a Switzerland-based company that specializes in power and automation technologies was the honourary chair.

Proceeds from the tournament will help establish a new Scholarship Program, which will benefit a number of current students and EMSB graduates, so that they can pursue their post secondary studies in vocational education, CEGEP studies or undergraduate studies. As well, funds will go towards the refurbishment and maintenance of the special collection of artwork that adorns the EMSB’s schools, centres and administration building.

Participants enjoyed 18 holes of golf (shotgun start, Vegas style), brunch, cocktails and dinner, plenty of fabulous door prizes, plus prizes for longest drive and closest to pin. As a special promotion, Lexus Toyota Gabriel (www.gabriel.toyota.ca) in St. Laurent was prepared to award a new car to a golfer who could get a hole-in-one on the 17th hole. Several people came close, but there was no winner in this category. Door prizes included a full set of Calloway Golf Clubs, an MP3 Player, a DVD/VCR, Three Nights’ Stay in Mont Tremblant, a Weekend for Two in Vermont, a fur coat, a four golf tickets for Lachute.

Mario Dumont, leader of the Action démocratique du Québec (ADQ), was among the golfers. He was part of a foursome which included EMSB Chairman Dominic Spiridigliozzi.

EMSB Deputy Director General Donald A. Reid coordinated the event, with the assistance of a devoted committee and a corps of volunteers who spent the day carrying out a wide array of different jobs. Rob Francis from the Team 990 spent the day on the course and served as emcee for the dinner.
