MONTREAL, JANUARY 28, 2016 – The English Montreal School Board welcomes the appointment of Pierre Moreau as Quebec’s new Minister of Education.

“We wish Mr. Moreau well in his new duties,” said Ms. Mancini. “His arrival in this portfolio comes at a critical time for the future of the public education system and we wish to extend to him an invitation to meet at the earliest opportunity.”

Ms. Mancini said that she hopes by appointing a new Minister of Education, this is a signal that the Quebec government will reconsider the adoption of Bill 86: An Act to modify the organization and governance of school boards. If passed, it will restructure the province’s school boards by limiting the public’s right to vote for school board commissioners.

The EMSB will appear before Parliamentary Hearings on Bill 86 on February 16. “As we have said many times already, this new law is absolutely unnecessary,” said Ms. Mancini. “What we need from an Education Minister is a commitment to not continually cut our budgets. I would like to share with Mr. Moreau that our Board has the highest success rate in the province at 88 percent and we were able to adopt a balanced budget despite the fiscal challenges we face. If it is not broke, why fix it? This is the question we asked the previous Minister and we will transmit the same message to Mr. Moreau.”
