EMSB EXTENDS BEST WISHES TO PIERRE MOREAU AND WELCOMES APPOINTMENT OF NEW EDUCATION MINISTER

MONTREAL, FEBRUARY 24, 2016 – The English Montreal School Board wishes to extend best wishes to Pierre Moreau for a speedy recovery from his illness while welcoming the appointment of Sebastien Proulx as the new Minister of Education responsible for primary and secondary education.

“We are all very sorry to hear about Mr. Moreau’s illness and wish him the very best in his recovery,” said EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini.

Ms. Mancini said she appreciated Mr. Moreau’s willingness to move slowly with Bill 86, the Act to modify the organization and governance of school boards. If passed it will restructure the province’s school boards by limiting the public’s right to vote for school board commissioners.

“We sincerely hope that Mr. Proulx will continue with such a prudent approach,” said Ms. Mancini. “This is an opportunity for the new Minister to listen to the ideas we have to increase the presence and input from parents and teachers. These ideas can be implemented within the current Education Act, can be adopted in a relatively short time frame, and will allow all of us to get back to the most important task - success for all students.

The nine English school boards in Quebec unanimously agree that Bill 86 is a distraction. It has been extremely divisive, and does nothing to improve education. The government should not lose this opportunity that has presented itself through the most unfortunate circumstances. We now patiently wait our turn to appear before Parliamentary Hearings on Bill 86.”
