MONTREAL, MARCH 21, 2016 – On Tuesday, March 22 (9:45 a.m.), the English Montreal School Board will present its brief on proposed Bill 86: An Act to modify the organization and governance of school boards at Parliamentary hearings in Quebec City. If passed, the Bill will restructure the province’s school boards by limiting the public’s right to vote for school board commissioners.

The EMSB strongly opposes the proposed legislation. EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini, Vice-Chair Sylvia Lo Bianco and Commissioner Joe Ortona will be available to meet with the media on the day around 10:30a.m. following their exit from the Commission hearing in Salle Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine (RC.184), in the Hôtel du Parlement.

Ms. Mancini has already welcomed newly appointed Education Minister Sébastien Proulx, and wished him well in his new duties. “His arrival in this portfolio comes at a critical time for the future of the public education system in Quebec,” she said. “As we have said many times before, this new law is absolutely unnecessary and goes contrary to the government’s stated objectives. What we need from our new Education Minister is a commitment to withdraw this undemocratic and unconstitutional draft law, and return to the drawing table to consult stakeholders across the education system on how best to encourage the community’s involvement in the management and control of our schools. I would like to share with Mr. Proulx that the EMSB has the highest success rate in the province at 88 percent, and we were able to adopt a balanced budget despite the fiscal challenges we face. Our question to the Minister remains: what exactly is the government trying to fix in our well run and successful Anglophone school system?”

The EMSB delegation to the National Assembly will be backed by student and parent supporters, as well as some members of the Council of Commissioners.
