MONTREAL, MARCH 17, 2016 – The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) will celebrate the long-awaited opening of a new double gymnasium and four additional classes at Vincent Massey Collegiate (5925 27th Avenue) in Rosemount on Friday, March 18 (11:45 a.m.). Hundreds of elementary school students will be there for a special soccer play day.

In the spring of 2012 the Quebec Ministry of Education announced funding in the amount of $4.3 million for Vincent Massey. EMSB Chairman Angela Mancini and Vice-Chairman Sylvia Lo Bianco worked diligently on this dossier for well over a year. Vincent Massey is an Article 240 special status school, with an enriched and structured CEGEP preparatory program. It is an EMSB high 10 indoor soccer teams as well as teams in basketball, volleyball, badminton, wrestling and archery.

“Vincent Massey is one of the jewels of our system,” said Ms. Mancini, who is also a graduate and the parent of a present-day student. “There had been a cap in enrolment for a very long time. Year after year we had to turn students away. This influx in much needed funding has brought the building up to the standards it deserves.”

Ms. Lo Bianco wished to express the EMSB’s gratitude to the former Minister of Education, Line Beauchamp. “Before she left office, Ms. Beauchamp made a commitment to us that Vincent Massey would get its gymnasium and additional classes. “We sincerely thank her for the support.”

A number of special guests will be on hand to take part in a celebrity shootout, with soccer balls donated by Evangelista Sports. Thanks to Groupe Sportscene, the owners of La Cage Brasserie Sportive and P.F. Chang`s and Interbox, guests will include professional boxers Yves Junior Ulysse and from Eye of the Tiger Management Dierry Jean and Parti Québecois Member of the National Assembly for Rosemount Jean-François Lisée. Ulysse has a 6-0 record with four knockouts. He hails from St. Michel and wants to work with youth in the community. Jean (29-2 with 20 knockouts) was the North American Boxing Federation and North American Boxing Association super lightweight champion. He fought Terence Crawford last October for the World Boxing Organization championship and used to be a social worker in St-Michel.

Vincent Massey graduate and present-day CTV News co-anchor Paul Karwatsky will be the master of ceremonies.

Ms. Mancini felt that the special soccer play day represented an excellent backdrop to showcase the new gymnasium. It is being organized by the Greater Montreal Athletic Association ( with the objective of introducing youngsters to the concept of competing in sport, as many students may not have had competitive sport experiences. Fair Play and maximum participation among students of all ability levels is encouraged. To accomplish this, schools are encouraged to divide students into teams of equal strength, a round-robin tournament structure is used and no score is kept during the games. This marks the first time the GMAA is organizing an elementary indoor soccer play day. It is open to Grade 6 students only. Boys and Girls will compete separately. The event is open to elementary schools within the EMSB, Lester B. Pearson School Board and private schools.
