MONTREAL, FEBRUARY 20, 2007- At a time of declining enrolment, the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) is pleased to announce that an inauguration and ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Fri. Feb. 23 (9:45 a.m.) for the expansion of Dunrae Gardens Elementary School (235 Dunrae) in Town of Mount Royal. Member of Parliament Irwin Cotler, TMR Mayor Vera Danyluk and a number of the school's former principals will be special guests.

Almost two years ago the provincial government provided the EMSB with $925,266 in funding for the construction of four new classrooms at Dunrae Gardens. The EMSB made representations to the Ministry for this specific project for many years. As of last September, Dunrae Gardens had 443 students in a building with the capacity for only 385. The long awaited extension has increased the capacity to 460.

Dunrae Gardens has a very successful French immersion program which annually results in a great demand for student places. The facility was originally constructed in 1929 and expanded once, in 1951. There are now 23 classrooms and two others which have been converted into science and music rooms. A few years ago one beautifully sized classroom had to be divided into two.

Member of the Quebec National Assembly for Mount Royal and Minister of Health and Social Services Phillippe Couillard was originally scheduled to preside over the ceremony. However, he has decided to run for a seat in the Quebec City area in the next election and will therefore not be available.
