EMSB TO HOLD REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONIES OVER A TWO-WEEK PERIOD

MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 2, 2017 – The English Montreal School Board will mark Remembrance Day across its youth sector.

The following EMSB schools held Remembrance Day observances on Thursday, November 2:

  • John Grant High School in Côte Saint Luc marked Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members. For more information, please contact Jag Trehin at: jtrehin@emsb.qc.ca.

  • Edward Murphy School in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve marked Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members.  The school marked the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid and the 25th anniversary of the Bosnia War. Veterans and current Canadian Forces members will be present to commemorate the three generations of Canadians who took part in the 20th century wars. The following EMSB school will hold Remembrance Day observances on Friday, November 3:

  • Mountainview Alternative High School (7450 Côte Saint Luc Road) in Côte Saint Luc will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (9:30 am). The school will mark the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid and the 25th anniversary of the Bosnia War. Veterans and current Canadian Forces members will be present to commemorate the three generations of Canadians who took part in the 20th century wars. The following EMSB schools will hold Remembrance Day observances on Monday, November 6:

  • Hampstead Elementary School (83 Thurlow) will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (1 pm to 1:45 pm). For more information, please contact Jag Trehin at: jtrehin@emsb.qc.ca.
  • Students from Vincent Massey Collegiate in Rosemount will be visiting the Ste Anne’s Veterans Hospital (305 blvd des Anciens Combattants) in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. For more information, please contact Rocco Speranza at: rsperanza@emsb.qc.ca.

  • Dunrae Gardens Elementary School (235 Dunrae) in T.M.R. will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (10:30 – 11:40). For more information, please contact Puynung Choy: cchoy@emsb.qc.ca. 

The following EMSB school will be holding a Remembrance Day observance on Tuesday, November 7:

  • Sinclair Laird Elementary School (8380 Wiseman) in Park Extension will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (10:30 am – 11:30 am). For more information, please contact Puynung Choy: cchoy@emsb.qc.ca

  • LaurenHill Academy Junior Campus (2355 Decelles) in St. Laurent will be hosting a Remembrance Day Assembly with special guest speaker and World War II veteran Col. David Hart and ceremonial bagpipe music performed by Black Watch reservist Private Sasha Matthew. For more information, please contact Elizabeth Pellicone: epellicone@emsb.qc.ca
  • Dalkeith Elementary School (7951 Dalkeith) in Anjou will host a traditional Remembrance Day ceremony featuring an interactive presentation on peace, an explanation about the significance of the poppy, a reading of "In Flanders Fields" and a biography about its author John McCrae, plus a minute of silence and the singing of "O Canada."  Students will also hear testimonials from Canadian Forces members about their lives and to reflect on the sacrifices Canadians made to defend our freedom. The students will also be participating in a volunteer project called “The Heart of a Solider”. The project asked students to create something, during their personal time, which honours and remembers veterans. The administration and staff will be asked to judge the creations. The winning pieces will be sent to the St. Anne de Bellevue Veterans Hospital. The following EMSB schools will be holding Remembrance Day observances on Wednesday, November 8:

  • Royal West Academy (189 Easton) in Montreal West will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (9:40 am – 12:25 pm). For more information, please contact Jag Trehin at: jtrehin@emsb.qc.ca.

  • Students from Rosemount High School and Perspectives High School will commemorate Remembrance Day at the Canadian Grenadier Guards Unit (4171 Esplanade Ave) at 10 am. The event will honour Canadian Veterans, Holocaust survivors as well as include the swearing in 30 Canadian citizens. Students in attendance will be able to partake in two of Canada finest traditions by welcoming Canada's newest citizens and embracing the achievements and sacrifices made by those who served Canada in times of war and peace.

    Additionally, the ceremony will also honour those who perished in the Holocaust by lighting six candles symbolizing the six million Jews who were murdered at the hands of the Nazis as well as a peace candle symbolizing our intent to unify the world in peace. The Rosemount High School Honour Band will be performing the national anthem.

  • East Hill Elementary School (10350 Perras) in R.D.P. will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (9:30 am). The school will mark the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid and the 25th anniversary of the Bosnia War. Veterans and current Canadian Forces members will be present to commemorate the three generations of Canadians who took part in the 20th century wars.   • Carlyle International School (109 Carlyle) in T.M.R. will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (11 am – 11:40 am). For more information, please contact Puynung Choy: cchoy@emsb.qc.ca

  • Lauren Hill Academy Senior Campus (2505 Cote Vertu) in St. Laurent will be hosting guest speaker Lt Samir Mesbah of the Royal Canadian Hussars, with opening and closing ceremonial bagpipe music performed by Cameron Stevens. For more information, please contact Elizabeth Pellicone: epellicone@emsb.qc.ca.

The following EMSB schools will be holding Remembrance Day observances on Thursday, November 9:

  • Program Mile End (4810 Van Horne) in Côte des Neiges will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (9:45 am to noon). Veterans will visit classes and a school-wide assembly will follow. For more information, please contact Jag Trehin at: jtrehin@emsb.qc.ca.
  • Vincent Massey Collegiate (5925 27e Avenue) in Rosemount will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (9:30 am). The school will mark the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid and the 25th anniversary of the Bosnia War. Veterans and current Canadian Forces members will be present to commemorate the three generations of Canadians who took part in the 20th century wars.   • Students from Dalkeith Elementary School in Anjou and Nesbitt Elementary School in Rosemount will participate in interactive Remembrance Day Ceremony held at the Canadian Grenadier Guards Unit (4171 Esplanade Ave).  

    The activities will include an interactive visit of a military unit, the peacekeeping efforts of the Canadian Forces and a ceremony that will focus on Kristallnacht, also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass. Leo Dortort, Kristallnacht witness and Holocaust survivor, will be addressing the students on his life during the war.

    Additionally, the ceremony will also honour those who perished in the Holocaust by lighting six candles symbolizing the six million Jews who were murdered at the hands of the Nazis as well as a peace candle symbolizing our intent to unify the world in peace. Veronica Mae Johnson, Citizenship Judge, will also speak.   • The Mackay Centre and Philip E. Layton Schools (3500 Decarie) in N.D.G. will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (9:30 am – 10:10 am). For more information, please contact Puynung Choy: cchoy@emsb.qc.ca. 

  • FACE Elementary School (3449 University) will participate in various Remembrance Day activities, including hearing guest speakers and respecting a minute of silence. For more information, please contact Elizabeth Pellicone: epellicone@emsb.qc.ca.

  • Edinburgh School (500 Hudson) in Montreal West will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members (10 am – 10:45 am). For more information, please contact Jag Trehin at: jtrehin@emsb.qc.ca.

  • Nesbitt Elementary School (6108 8th Avenue) will commemorate Remembrance Day through poetry, reflections, the lighting of peace candles, and prayers - all with the important message to promote peace in our world. The program is arranged by the school in conjunction with the Dominion Institute’s Memory Project and the Canadian Grenadier Guards. The students will also be participating in a volunteer project called “The Heart of a Solider”. The project asked students to create something, during their personal time, which honours and remembers veterans. The administration and staff will be asked to judge the creations. The winning pieces will be sent to the St. Anne de Bellevue Veterans Hospital.   • Bancroft Elementary School (4563 St. Urbain) in the Plateau will host several assemblies for all grades. Pre-kindergarten to grade 3 will listen to Capt. Adrien Cherrier tell his personal story of military service and why he believes it is important to remember.
