MONTREAL, DECEMBER 5, 2017- Ė Nicholas Katalifos, principal of Roslyn Elementary School in Westmount, was recently awarded the Senate of Canada Medal for public service in recognition of the Red Chamberís 150th anniversary at a ceremony in the Senate Chamber in Ottawa.

Senator Leo Housakos nominated Mr. Katalifos for the Senate of Canada Medal for public service in recognition of the Red Chamberís 150th anniversary. The award was presented to him by Senator Housakos and Speaker of the Senate of Canada, George Furey.

Mr. Katalifos was recognized due to the outstanding service that he provides to Canada and Canadians, including his 27-year career in the field of education at the English Montreal School Board, his work in the Greek community, and his advocacy work providing better services to people with autism.

Mr. Katalifos was previously the principal of Pierre de Coubertin and General Vanier elementary schools in St. Leonard and vice-principal of Gardenview Elementary School in St. Laurent and Westmount High School. He taught at LaurenHill Academy, and worked as a Community Liaison Officer for the Multicultural and Multiracial Division of the Community Services Department.

As the chairman of Giant Steps School and Resource Centre, Mr. Katalifos is involved in their Inclusive City project. He is a member of the newly created Transforming Autism Care Consortium Steering Committee (an innovative and unique new autism research network), past president of the Hellenic Congress of Quebec and is involved with the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal. He also sat on the Quebec selection committee for the Horatio Alger Foundation of Canada.

Community outreach and volunteerism have always been important to Mr. Katalifos. This has prepared him well for his professional work and efforts in advancing care and support for people with autism.

Mr. Katalifos joined fellow award recipients Tony Loffreda, Amos Sochaczevski, Basil Angelopoulos, George Alexopoulos, Pat Tamvakologou-Kyriacou, Peter Limniatis, Dimitri Soudas and Anna Maria Buondonno-Maturi in accepting this honour.
