LEONARDO DA VINCI SCHOOL MARKS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

MONTREAL, APRIL 24, 2007- About 250 past and present students, teachers and administrators gathered at Leonardo Da Vinci Elementary School in RDP on April 19 to celebrate the school's 25th anniversary.

The evening gave alumni the opportunity to get together once again to reminisce about the fond memories they had about the school that has served the rapidly growing English-speaking population of RDP since it first opened its doors in 1981. The corridors of the main floor of the building were lined with a wide assortment of memorabilia from the school's past, including the brief period of time when it occupied the four-building complex of the old Amos School.

Speakers included current principal Phyllis Marinelli DíAmato, EMSB commissioner Rosa Cerelli, and the school's first principal, Tom Ornawka, who reflected about the evolution of the school during its first five years of existence. The keynote speaker f was Dr. Rolando Del Maestro, the director of Brain Tumour Research at the Montreal Neurological Institute. An enthusiast about the life and work of Leonardo Da Vinci, who also possesses one of the largest collections of artefacts relating to the Renaissance era artist and inventor, Dr. Del Maestro spoke about how Da Vinci saw beauty, ugliness and a person's soul through his many drawings. There was also a performance of a selection of songs by the Leonardo Da Vinci School Band, which is made up of Grade 4, 5 and 6 students. It was also announced that the school was making a donation to the Montreal Neurological Institute's Research Centre. Also in attendance were Region 1 Director Paricia Moffa and LaFontaine MNA Tony Tomassi.
