EMSB URGES SUPPORT FOR VICTIMS OF WILDFIRES IN GREECE

MONTREAL, SEPTEMBER 19, 2007- In the wake of the recent outbreak of fires in Greece, English Montreal School Board (EMSB) Director General Antonio Lacroce has communicated with all schools and centres in the system and urged that a sensitization process be undertaken with students.

"The fires have had a dramatic impact not only on the economy of Greece, but on the lives of many of its citizens," stated Mr. Lacroce. "The wildfires in Greece have destroyed lives, homes, and the livelihood of thousands of families who will need assistance for many years in order to recover. Today, most of these fires have been extinguished, yet the country still continues to mobilize all of its resources to address this catastrophic situation."

"As a character community with the philosophy of 'people helping people,' the EMSB acknowledges the suffering experienced by the citizens of Greece as well as by the many individuals of Greek origin currently living in the Greater Montreal area. The ravaging of many areas of Greece has shocked and saddened us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims of this tragedy."

Mr. Lacroce emphasized that the EMSB strongly supports all those efforts and initiatives which can serve to ease the pain of our fellow human beings. In this regard, principals have been requested to facilitate any activities (e.g. fundraising, discussions, etc.) which will sensitize their respective school communities to the unprecedented devastation indicated above. Enlisting the collaboration of teachers, professionals, support personnel, and parents has been strongly encouraged.

With regard to fundraising, the EMSB has suggested that contributions be made to the following:

  • Donating online at: https://www.paypaq.com/redcross/en/ (choose "Fires in Greece")
  • Calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Canadian Red Cross office.
  • Sending a cheque payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "Fires in Greece" to Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.
