MONTREAL, NOVEMBER 27,  2007—    CTV’s Ben Mulroney, the popular host of Canadian Idol and etalk,  visited Pierre de Coubertin Elementary School (  in St. Léonard   November 27  in his capacity as a national spokesperson for UNICEF Canada.

A number of EMSB schools raise money for UNICEF. In the past month Pierre de Coubertin students raised $4,600 for this cause.

UNICEF is the world's leader for children, working in 156 countries and territories to save, protect and enhance the lives of girls and boys. UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, promotes quality basic education, protects children from violence, exploitation and AIDS, and is the world's largest provider of vaccines for developing nations. A global leader in emergencies with six decades of on-the-ground experience, UNICEF saves and rebuilds children's lives in natural disasters and conflict. UNICEF is funded entirely by voluntary contributions from individuals, businesses, foundations, schools, associations and governments.

Mulroney entered the gymnasium to thunderous applause from the 650 students on hand. Music teacher Carolyn Hanenian  introduced six musical acts from the school’s recent Halloween Idol contest which included  singers, dancers, a gymnast and a mime. Lili-Anna Peresa, the executive director for UNICEF Quebec, gave the students some  background into where their donations go. Mulroney then gave a powerpoint presentation of his trip to Malawi, where UNICEF funds are being directed.  EMSB Vice-Chair Sylvia Lo Bianco thanked Mulroney and the UNICEF team for visiting. Principal Nick Katalifos and Vice-Principal Rosetta Ortona-Perri pledged to continue supporting this worthwhile cause.
