PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL, JANUARY 20,  2009-   As part of Public School Education Month and 10th anniversary celebrations, the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) will present its first Science Olympiad on Wednesday, January 21, (10 a.m. to Noon)  at Laurier MacDonald High School (7355 Viau)  in St. Léonard.

This event will have 288 students from 27 participating schools test their creativity and scientific knowledge by competing in two specific, science-related challenges. Cycle 3 elementary and Cycle 1 high school students who have a knack for science  will participate. Their efforts will be decided by a panel of 15 judges who have been selected from the EMSB’s Adult and Vocational Centres. Each student will receive a certificate of participation, and each winning team will be awarded a plaque for their school. As well, the winners of the challenges will get a special voucher for a pizza lunch for a class of 32 students. Each school has been permitted to enter a maximum of two teams for the Science Olympics, with each team containing no more than six students.   In addition, Gerald McShane Elementary School in Montreal North extended an invitation to its neighbouring francophone school,  l’école Jules Verne, to participate as well. Plaques will be given out for the first, second and third prize to the winning teams in each of the two challenges.

The students will be given two timed challenges. In one they will build a structure and in the second , a projectile.   “No preparation is required on the part of the students, but  the Science Olympics encourage  students to use their problem solving abilities in a hands-on fashion as well providing a forum to develop and/or  showcase teamwork skills,” says event chair Ginette Clarke, the principal of Rosemount High School.   In addition to Gerald McShane, participating elementary schools are Carlyle, Dalkeith, East Hill, Elizabeth Ballantyne, Gardenview, Holy Cross, Honoré-Mercier, Leonardo Da Vinci, Merton, Michelangelo, Our Lady of Pompei, Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Sinclair Laird, St. Brendan, St. Dorothy, St. John Bosco, Willingdon, FACE and Royal Vale. The latter two have both primary and secondary students taking part.  Other high schools participating are John F. Kennedy, John Paul I, Rosemount and Royal West Academy
