FRENCH FOR THE FUTURE CONFERENCE AIMS AT PROMOTING BILINGUALISM

MONTREAL, APRIL 3, 2009—The Bibliothèque National du Québec  (475, boulevard De Maisonneuve Est) will be the site of the 2009 French for the Future Montreal Conference, beginning at   9  a.m. Aimed at promoting bilingualism amongst Canadian youth, the theme is  Respect, Culture and Integration into Québécois society. Some 285 students from nine high schools and three school boards will be present.

Participating schools are: John F. Kennedy High School  in St. Michel, Westmount High , Lauren Hill Academy in St. Laurent and Royal Vale in N.D.G. from the English Montreal School Board (EMSB);   Lakeside Academy,  St. Thomas High School, MacDonald High School and Pierrefonds Comprehensive from   the Lester B. Pearson School Board; and Howard S. Billings High School in Chateauguay from the New Frontiers School Board.
 
Stephane Giroux of CTV Montreal News and Le Journal de Montreal news editor George Kalogerakis, will kick off the event with a discussion about what it is like for each of them to work in the French language. Giroux is a veteran television journalist whose mother tongue is French; Kalogerakis is an Anglophone who left his city editor’s position at The  Montreal Gazette to join the French language Le Journal de Montreal. Noted vee-jay Malik Shaheed will moderate this session.

Students will then be taking part in a game show based on Canadian and Quebecois culture. It will be moderated by Max Cooke, a board member of French for the Future and the communications director of the Canadian Education Association.

Musician Andrea Lindsay will perform, followed by a debate between among some of the students. A presentation from the young francophone hip hop dance group L’école de danse Vise Haut. In the afternoon La Ligue D’improvisation de Montréal will perform one of their entertaining skits.  For more details log on to www.french-future.org.
