EAST HILL MUSIC COMPOSITION CLUB PRODUCES
NEW EMSB ON-HOLD MESSAGE SONG

MONTREAL, OCTOBER 7 ,  2009-    The English Montreal School Board is proud to announce that a new  bilingual song for its on-hold message has been produced by the Music Composition Club of  East Hill Elementary School in Rivière des Prairies, guided by teacher Rocco Simone. This replaces the previous recording used for this purpose by Dante Elementary School in St. Léonard.

This new EMSB theme song is an off shoot of the East Hill version, which was one of Mr.  Simone’s first projects when he arrived at the school four years ago. “The lyrics of the the previous shool song were original but the music wasn’t,” he said. “I wanted both the music and lyrics to be original.  Some Grades 5 and 6 students, along with myself, brainstormed lyrics that we felt best represented our school.  We were aiming for a lyric that would allow any listener to feel the pride and positive spirit that is present at East Hill.”

Mr.  Simone says that his team also decided that unlike most school songs, East Hill’s would follow a pop song structure: intro-verse-chorus-bridge, something they were studying at the time at the  composition club level. “We spent weeks analyzing radio tunes and the craft of writing pop lyrics,” he said. “The next step was a lot more difficult-melodic writing. Sitting around the piano using our voices, recorders, xylophones and manuscript we worked on the melody for our chorus. The challenge was to create a melody that was uplifting and that each level would have fun singing. This process went on for weeks. Finally, the East Hill Song was born.  Back then we premiered it for the entire school during one our annual concerts. It was a hit!  It’s been our school song ever since. I still have students who graduated come by and tell me how much they loved and still remember the school song.”

As for the EMSB version of the song, Mr. Simone says that he and the students basically altered some the lyrics and had an impromptu recording using his laptop computer. “The biggest challenge was trying to respect the East Hill melody while incorporating new lyrics,” he said. “We found it quite strange to sing or listen to it at first. We all stumbled on the original East Hill lyrics.”

Here are the lyrics and music, written  by Veronica Bastone, Peter Domenicano,   Veronica La Leggia, Ivana Matani, Deborah Morena, Sarah Morena, Giuliana Quattrocchi and Rocco Simone
