This prestigious award is Canada’s highest award for teaching and is only given to a maximum of 15 teachers from across the country annually. A $5000 financial award and an all-expense-paid week of events in Ottawa at the beginning of October, which included a private reception at 24 Sussex drive, accompanied the award.

Mr. Sweet was cited at the award ceremonies for having founded the student press – Learning for a Cause – at Lester B. Pearson HS, having been appointed to Canada’s Commission for UNESCO, founding the Pearson Prize Teen Choice Award, being inducted into the Wall of Fame at the National Teachers Hall of Fame (USA) and for having been profiled in Canada’s 100th edition of the Who’s Who as an educator of influence.

Earlier in 2009 Michael Sweet was given the ATEQ Teaching award in Quebec and is traveling to Philadelphia in November to receive the NCTE High School Teacher of Excellence Award – an American-based award given to 20 high school teachers annually for having made significant contributions to the field education.
