MONTREAL, JANUARY 8 , 2010 - Vincent Massey Collegiate (5925 27th Avenue), an English Montreal School Board (EMSB) high school in Rosemount, will host the Greater Montreal Athletic Association Wrestling All-Star meet on Tues. Jan. 26 (1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.). EMSB graduate David Zilberman, who attended LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent, will be the the honourary chair. He was a member of the 2008 Canadian Olympic team in China and is now a physical education teacher at Vanier College.

In addition to Vincent Massey, the only EMSB school in the GMAA wrestling league, others participating will be: defending league champions Kahnawake Survival School (KSS), Loyola High School (LHS), Selwyn House School (SHS),Beurling Academy, Lakeside Academy, Massey Vanier High School and Westwood High School. The format will see KSS to take on an all-star group of wrestlers. Competitors have been selected based on either past results, current records or other factors. Each school must have at least one participant in the starting lineup.

Traditionally, the winning school has hosted the meet. During the pre-season coaches meeting, it was proposed by VMC coach Jason Chen that the location be shifted to a different school each year as a way of both promoting and expanding the sport of wrestling throughout the high school level. The motion was passed anSd VMC has agreed to host the first meet in this new rotational format.

The VMC wrestling program was launched by Mr. Chen when he arrived at the school to teach social studies three years ago. In 2007-2009 there were nine males and two females on the team who garnered two fourth place finishes, andone fifth place finish among the former and a silver and bronze for the latter. Overall VMC finished ninth out of 12 teams in the standings. Last year 20 males and one female signed up. The males won two golds, a silver and two bronze, as well as a fourth and sixth place finish. A silver was won by the lone female. Overall the team finished an impressive fourth among 12. Thus far this year the team is 2-0. Coaching the GMAA all-stars is Cliff Wilson of WWHS while KSS is guided by Peter Montour.
