EMSB BOARD MEETING TO DECIDE UPON PROPOSED SCHOOL CHANGES IN ST. LAURENT, MTL. NORTH AND POINT ST. CHARLES

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, JANUARY 11 , 2010 -  The English Montreal School Board will hold a special meeting of the Council of Commissioners  on Wed. Jan. 13    at 7:30  p.m. at 6000 Fielding Ave.  for schools affected by some proposed boundary changes in St. Laurent.

Last March, the Council of Commissioners   accepted a recommendation from the Long Range Planning Committee to send a proposal involving a switch in French programs for two  St. Laurent elementary schools – Parkdale and  Cedarcrest - and also involving Gardenview – out for consultation. This would involve rebranding Cedarcest as a French immersion school, moving  its English core students to Parkdale and closing the latter’s French immersion program and having them attend the new Cedarcest. The latter would also draw students from a redrawn Gardenview boundary.

Gardenview is operating beyond capacity with 834 students  and presently houses some students at an annex in the Fraser Academy building. The forecast calls for it to grow by 150 students over the next five years. A final vote will occur at a special meeting in mid-January. Parkdale has an enrolment of 330 while Cedarcrest’s student population is 117.

Also on the agenda are proposed program and boundary changes in Montreal North, where  the governing board of Gerald McShane Elementary School wishes to switch from a bilingual to full French immersion program and Point St. Charles, where a switch from English core to bilingual has been requested by the  St. Gabriel Elementary School governing board.
