“It’s a Brand New Day”
EMSB TO HONOUR VOLUNTEERS APRIL 21 IN ST.  LÉONARD
MONTREAL,  APRIL 21, 2010    The English Montreal School Board will hold its annual Volunteer Appreciation Evening on Wednesday, April 21 at the Baron Royal (6020 Jean Talon Street East) in St. Léonard. This year’s event is being held during National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 18-24, under the theme of “It’s Your Day.”

Time and space do not allow the EMSB to honour all of its nearly 1,500 volunteers in person. Therefore, only those individuals who have volunteered for more than five years will attend the reception, representing some 500 people. However, several thousand copies of a commemorative program book will be distributed to each school. The emcees for the evening will be Michael J. Cohen from the EMSB, along with two students from Laurier MacDonald High School in St. Leonard.  La Capitale Financial Services is the title sponsor for this event.

Volunteers of Distinction
This year’s Volunteers of Distinction  - and tying in nicely to the event theme – are two”Days”  -the husband and wife team of Scott and Cindy Day. Scott currently serves as the chairman of the Central Parents’ Committee (CPC) as well as the Chairman of the Parents’ Committee for Region 3. Cindy is the Chair of the Westmount High School Governing Board.

Scott and Cindy started their involvement as school parent volunteers in 1991, when they served on the parents’ committee at St. Gabriel School. From there, they have built an impressive resume of volunteer service to the EMSB. Scott Served on the fundraising committee and the Home & School Association at Westmount Park School; he served as a Region 3 delegate from Westmount Park for the Central Parents’ Committee; and he was on the Westmount High School Governing Board. Cindy was on the Westmount Park Parents’ Committee; was the first chairman of Westmount Park’s newly-formed Governing Board when the EMSB was established in 1998; and was on the Marymount Academy Governing Board.

In fact, aside from their already busy schedules, Scott and Cindy still volunteer at Westmount Park, where they formed its Home & School Association. They help organize the grade 6 graduation ceremonies, help out with the grade 6 breakfast and the school’s numerous pizza sales, as well as the annual turkey lunch, which has been a Christmas tradition at Westmount Park for the past four years.

“Throughout the years, it looks like we got a reputation that we do everything in tandem,” joked Cindy. “But when we started to volunteer at St. Gabriel, we found out that we enjoyed it, because there are a lot of things that you can do. And some people say that by being a volunteer, you can help in the direction of what the school will take, even education-wise. You get to see how a school changes, and it’s nice to know that you were part of that. You always have to stay rooted, because whatever you do, it’s always for the kids.”
“It’s great to be involved,” added Scott. “If your own kids attend the school that you volunteer at – especially elementary – they love to see you there, because it makes them feel better. But you also realize that you’re not only doing this for your own kids, but for the entire school system as a whole.”
When they’re not dedicating a great deal of time to the EMSB, Scott and Cindy are the proud parents of four daughters. The couple also work at the same place, St. Mary’s Hospital, where Scott has been an orderly for the past 19 years, and Cindy works as a part-time nurse and teaches nursing assistants.
