MONTREAL, May 26, 2010 – Marymount Academy and Royal West Academy each produced a winner at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, cementing the EMSB’s long run of scientific success.

Capturing a gold medal in the intermediate category was Marymount Academy’s Abicumaran Uthamacumaran whose “Kicking cancer with KAI-1” project also earned top billing at the Bell Montreal Regional Science Fair this past April.

In addition to the gold medal, Uthamacumaran won a $2500 trip and the right to participate in the Australian National Youth Science Forum Award in January 2011, a $2000 scholarship to the University of Western Ontario and the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science Award, valued at $750.

Joining Uthamacumaran in the EMSB winner’s circle was Royal West Academy’s Jessica Matschek, whose work entitled “Decoding Depression” earned her a University of Ottawa Undergraduate Research Scholarship Award valued at $10,000.
Over 500 students from across Canada competed in the national science competition in Peterborough, Ontario.
