NOBEL PEACE PRIZE NOMINEE GREG MORTENSON TO SPEAK AT EMSB SCHOOLS JUNE 22

CÔTE SAINT-LUC,  JUNE  10, 2010Greg Mortenson, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee,  nurse,   mountaineer, author and executive director of the Central Asia Institute, will speak to students from four schools on Tuesday, June 22.

Mr. Mortenson will be at Elizabeth Ballantyne Elementary School (314 Northview) in Montreal West at 9:15 a.m. and at 10:30 a.m. at Merton Elementary School (5554 Robinson) in Côte Saint-Luc.

English Montreal School Board (EMSB) Spiritual Community Animator Catherine Cherry extended the invitation to Mr. Mortenson when she heard he was coming to Montreal to speak at the Rotary International Convention. “I invited him to talk to our students about how he began and continues to build schools, especially for girls, in the far reaches of Afghanistan and Pakistan,” said Ms. Cherry. “He will talk about the transformation experienced by a community once the children are given the benefit of education.”

Mr. Mortenson, also known as “Dr. Greg,” is the author of “Three Cups of Tea:  One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace, One School at a Time” and “Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan”.  

Elizabeth Ballantyne will host students from nearby Edinburgh Elementary and. representatives from St. John Bosco in Ville Émard will attend the assembly at Merton.

 “Our students have been inspired by his story, and these four schools raised money for the ‘Pennies for Peace’ program which supports Dr. Greg’s Central Asia Institute,” said Ms. Cherry.   “The students will be presenting their cheques to Dr. Greg.
